For a popular and not particularly fancy club, they had surprisingly good alcohol. Steve took a good swig from his beer, humming as he set it back down on the counter.
"I'm glad to know," he smiled, leaning a little into her space. He settled his hand on her back, a light but still present touch. "You've certainly made my days brighter, too." Surviving the war had been great, getting to go back to New York, even if he wouldn't go so far as to call it home. But until he ran into her again, his days hadn't been particularly exciting. Hadn't been much of anything other than dull and a little repetitive, actually.
Mary reached out and placed her hand on top of his. "I think I've always dreamed about meeting a man like you, even if we have technically met before."
It was different then though. Giving him a bath was her trying to be helpful, even if she did steal a few looks at his body. As a young woman who was ultimately curious about a man, she couldn't help it. They had spoken a few more times after that, but the situation was so much different. Here they seemed more like equals. Here she could really get to know him for the man that he was.
"Technically, yes. But you only really got to know me now."
It was for the best, all things considered. There was a war then, a war that Steve was in part convinced would take his life. If she had gotten to know him then like she did now, then there would always be the risk that his loss would be more difficult on her. It would have been more difficult on him too, to grow close to her only to have to give that up.
Felt like a whole new life now, with brand new opportunities, a future he hadn't even dared to consider before. Now, he had the freedom to hope and wish for things he never thought he'd get to have. Smiling at her, he leaned in and pressed a kiss to her temple, lingering for a moment before pulling away again.
"Well, for what it's worth, I do like them," he said, hoping to soothe any concerns Mary might've had. "They've always treated me nicely. Guess I am glad for that much, at least."
They could've easily told him to stay away from Mary. Not that that would've stopped him, though. The only thing that would've gotten Steve to stay away was if Mary herself told him she wanted nothing to do with him.
Perhaps her American relatives knew that Steve would not give up on her. Perhaps they could see the inevitable and they wanted to accept it with as much grace as they could.
"And I've never been as fond of another man as I am of you." Mary took another sip of her gin and then smiled at him. "You've left me with a desire to know what sort of kiss could be better than the one you gave me."
"Well, good. I was sort of hoping for that," he teased a little, winking briefly at her as he took a slow sip from his beer. He licked at his lips as he lowered it again, glancing to the side for a moment as he set his beer down, then shifted in a hint closer to her. "I could always show you, if you want me to."
Her eyes widened a hint and she nodded. "I... I think I do." Mary's pulse began racing again at the idea of having him close to her with his lips on hers again. "Is it... appropriate to do in public?" She wasn't so naive to know that eventually things between would reach a point where they should be done behind closed doors.
"I'm sure we can find a quiet corner somewhere." Not entirely private, granted, but better than out here. Taking a last drink from his beer, he put it away, letting her help herself to her own drink one last time while he paid for both. Seemed a bit of a waste not to finish them, but Steve's mind was elsewhere entirely at this point. They could just grab another drink afterwards, if they wanted to.
Taking hold of her hand, he nudged lightly, waiting to make sure she was ready to follow after him, wherever he went. "Come with me."
Mary finished her gin and then let Steve take her hand. There was a great possibility that she was about to do something slightly untoward in a public place. And yet, because she was with him, it did not bother her so much. No one here was going to judge her. No one knew who she was. The last gulp of gin had given her a shot of confidence.
He hadn't been here too many times before, but he knew the area well enough to know where to find them a more private spot. Not completely private, granted, but it was something of a blind spot, a nook just behind the corridor leading to the bathrooms, yet not within view to anyone walking by unless they strayed from their path considerably. The small decorative plant nearby also helped a little bit.
Steve drew her in closer to him, leaning back against the wall and holding her as he wrapped his arms around her, leaning in to press his lips to hers again.
She was glad of the near privacy at least. How had he found this place? Previous experience? She would rather not think about that.
Mary allowed herself to be pulled in with him, feeling cozy in their little nook. She placed her hands on his chest and once again put her mouth on his.
Old habits, actually. He got far too used to scouting any room he stepped into, studying every corner and escape route, committing it all to memory. He was glad he got to use that knowledge for this, though.
Sliding one hand down to the small of her back, he lifted his other hand up, cupping her face and swiping his thumb down her cheek. Canting his head, he parted his lips again, tongue drawing across her own, though this time trying to get her to open her mouth for him.
Mary made a soft noise against his mouth and then tentatively opened hers, allowing his tongue to come in. She had never kissed a man like this before. The sensation was a bit wet, but also arousing. She could taste the beer on his tongue. Gently, she opened her lips a bit more to encourage him to deepen the kiss.
He moved slowly, almost tentatively, brushing his tongue along the inside of her lips, tracing the row of teeth, before finally pushing into her mouth, seeking out her own tongue. His hand fell from her face, sliding down her neck, thumb trailing over the dip of her throat. He could do it a lot quicker and more intense, but he also didn't want to scare or overwhelm her. It was better he take his time and they take things slowly, at least until he saw how she reacted.
Moving slowly was wonderful and intimate to her. She loved both the taste and feel of his mouth and the way his fingers brushed against her flesh. There was no resistance from her. In fact, Mary slid her tongue back against his, not wanting him to stop. She could feel the rush of pleasure flowing through her body as she continued her motions.
Steve let out a low hum against her mouth, feeling a rush of pleasure wash over him. He knew any more than this and he'd be pushing his luck, but the way she moved so eagerly with him, returning each motion of his tongue, made it very hard for him to resist and behave. Well... sort of behave. Felt like they were looking at proper behavior in the rearview mirror at this point.
He did curl his arm a little tighter around her waist, though, fingers curling into her clothes as he pulled her close and pressed her flush against him. His thumb dipped lower, tracing her collarbone, enjoying the thrill of any contact of skin on skin he got to have with her.
One of her hands moved up to brush through his hair. It was soft on the sides where it wasn't slicked. She found herself melting into him and his kiss, her lips not wanting to leave his. It felt too good to be this close. His kisses made her feel like she was alive after never really living before.
Mary slid her tongue back against his and then ventured to push hers into his mouth.
His mouth parted wider in as much of an invitation as he could manage, swallowing a whimper as she took the initiative. Far from taking the lead completely —which Steve wouldn't be at all opposed to, either—, it was nice when she pushed for more herself, daring to show some eagerness and curiosity. It made him feel a little weak on the knees, if he were to be honest, but he didn't mind it in the least.
He brushed his arm lower, though, the hand on her waist falling to her hip, fingers curling over her hipbone.
She was curious and Steve made her feel comfortable. It was a different feeling to have her tongue in a mouth that wasn't her own, but she didn't dislike it. The whole experience was warm and a bit wet. The biggest difference about it was that it was Steve. Mary wouldn't have felt brave enough to do it with anyone else.
She only pulled back because she hadn't been able to get a proper breath in about five minutes and her chest was starting to burn. Mary rested her cheek against his and panted lightly, waiting for a moment before speaking.
Steve was glad to break the kiss too, admittedly. He had forgotten that he sort of needed air for a moment there, and as he finally inhaled, he could almost feel his head spin from the sudden rush of oxygen. Closing his eyes, he breathed slowly through parted lips, forehead resting lightly against hers as he brushed his mouth across her cheek in a ghost of a kiss.
"Care to revise your opinion?" He said that a bit teasingly, pulling back with a small smile on his lips.
Mary laughed breathlessly, pressing her forehead to his. "On kisses? That was wonderful." She gave him another light kiss. "I've never been kissed like that, Steve."
It was incredible and she found that she was left wanting more. This wasn't the right place for it though. Even though they were in their own little corner, she would rather it be in a place where it could be just the two of them.
He grinned at her answer, letting out a faint chuckle. "I'll take that as a sign you'll want to do it again in the future."
But he agreed— not now, not here. If not for the fact that they were still in public, then for the fact that he was becoming aroused enough that it could pose as a problem soon enough.
"Absolutely," she said with a grin. "But right now, I want you to dance with me." Mary grabbed his hand and tugged him out of their little nook. It didn't even dawn on her that she might be arousing him to the point of no return. Her experiences with men were still quite limited.
It caught him a bit off-guard, but he couldn't help laughing when she pulled away and then practically dragged him back to the dance floor. At least that would help clear his mind, he figured. And he did like dancing with her, so he was glad to do that for as long as she liked. Or, more realistically, until they got tired, though before it was too late to drop her off back home without raising any suspicions.

Mary knew they weren't the relations that he would really have to impress, but it was good to at least have that in their favor.
