That was fine, because the way she leaned in seemed like a sign in itself, and without thinking Steve was already leaning in the rest of the way, meeting her halfway as his lips pressed to hers. He closed his eyes and tilted his head thoughtlessly, a seamless gesture that had their mouths slotting together like two pieces that matched perfectly.
His lips felt soft and warm against hers. Gently, she curled her fingers in his hair to keep him close. It felt like they’d been leading up to this moment for a while now. She broke the kiss but kept them close, all too soon leaning in for more.
James let out a sigh into the kiss, soft and muffled. His whole body felt alight as a shiver trailed over him from head to toe, and his fingers weaved deeper into her hair, his arm curled tighter around her waist. He couldn't remember the last time that it felt this good to pull anyone so close, to hold them so near to his chest, and he wanted nothing more than for this moment to last forever.
Kissing him was wonderful. Diana liked the feel of his lips and the touch of his fingers. She only let the embrace break so they could breathe. She was much stronger than he, but Diana knew he was the only one capable of holding her in place.
He practically gasped for air when they broke the kiss. She felt so wonderful, he couldn't help but ache for more, yet he wasn't so sure what was really appropriate, or how far she wanted to go. He was more than happy to just kiss her and hold her close all night, if that was what she wanted. For one night, to pretend that there wasn't a war going on just outside this room.
She had different views of what was appropriate. So it was really more for his benefit that she asked, “Will you be staying the night?” There was only the one bed, and she remembered his reluctance before at sharing space with her as they slept.
Steve paused at the question, eyes flicking across her face. "I... well, if you want me to," he said, voice soft, cheeks getting a little warm. He thought it was obvious enough that he wanted to spend the night with her, but maybe he'd been a little too subtle.
He doubted Diana would feel offended by the forwardness, if she even thought it forward at all. But still, the least he could do was make sure that she wanted this, too.
She wondered if it was Ares's influence that caused people to be so uncertain with their physical attention toward one another. She didn't understand the hesitance, but she would be patient and try to encourage.
Steve doubted Ares had much of anything to do with it. It was just how society was, and what was deemed as appropriate or not. Things had evolved quite a lot, but there was still a long way to go.
But none of that mattered to Diana, and Steve couldn't be happier about it. Truth be told, he didn't even know if he'd outlive the war, and even if he did he still imagined that Diana would go back to her island. If all he could get was whatever little memories and moments they could get in these in-betweens, then he would take them and cherish them.
"Good," he breathed out in relief, smiling. He slid a hand across her waist, the other cupping her cheek, fingers weaving into her hair as he leaned in to kiss her.
She let out a sigh of contentment, leaning her body into his. Her lips parted for him. She knew that war would be dangerous for them, but she had no worries about how things would end. At the moment, Diana wasn't thinking of anything other than the feeling of Steve's body against hers and the touch of his fingers in her hair.
He let out a soft, surprised little hum when she parted her lips, gently dipping his tongue past them. The taste of her mouth was enough to send a shiver through him, making his heart pick up pace. Without moving away from her at all, he managed to shrug off his jacket, feeling a little more comfortable once he was down to his sweater. Taking off his boots would be a little harder without pulling away from her, but he'd deal with that issue in a moment.
She felt a shiver in her own body and smiled, daring to grip onto him a little tighter. She could feel him moving and broke away. Oh, of course, he should be comfortable if he was going to stay the night.
"Please make yourself comfortable." She took the jacket, hanging it up so it wouldn't get in the way.
Steve let out a soft sound when she pulled away from him, looking a little lost for a moment, with a hint of disappointment he couldn't hide. He let out a shuddered breath, then swallowed dryly and nodded, using the opportunity to take off his boots. After a moment's consideration, he took off his sweater too, so he was down to a more comfortable undershirt.
The pants stayed on, however. He wasn't really sure how far Diana wanted to go tonight, and it felt too presumptuous to assume.
He stood there a little awkwardly for a moment, then sat down by the edge of the bed, looking up at Diana.
She soon sat down beside him, taking his hand and threading his fingers through hers. "I may go back home, when this ends," she told him, "but I do not think I will stay. I have seen so much of this world, so much of mankind. I think I would miss it if I were away too long."
She touched his hair lightly, waiting for his smile.
He curled his fingers through hers when she spoke. He smiled at her, letting out a slow, relieved sigh, some tension in his chest he didn't even know he was holding in.
"Good," he murmured. "I mean, I... not that I want you to be away from your home. But I would miss you too. Terribly."
She edged closer to him, pressing a soft kiss to his mouth. "I do not wish to be away from them, either," she admitted, "but even more, I do not wish to be away from you, Steve Trevor."
Even in small things like sleeping. The bed had less room than the ship, but she hoped he would not protest.
He put an arm around her, hand curling around her waist to pull her close. He smiled against her lips, cheeks flushing a little, brushing his nose across her cheek and pressing a light kiss there next.
"Then don't be away from me," he said, as much an offer as it was a plea. He didn't want her going anywhere.
Steve returned the kiss all too gladly, both arms wrapping around her as he tried to coax her to climb up on the bed with him. There was only one pillow but it seemed big enough for the two of them, and he tried to get both their heads resting on it.
Diana felt him move them and complied, stretching out next to him. Feeling his body this way was exciting. Her hands left his hair and trailed along his shoulders, sliding down his chest and back up again.
He let out a pleased sigh when he felt her hands roaming his chest and arms, his own arm curling a little tighter around her. His hand moved up to weave his fingers through her hair, slipping back down to trace a path along her neck and down her spine, stopping near the small of her back.
She shivered again, pressing as close to him as she could. It was hard to imagine that she would ever get tired of this. Even the idea of sleeping was unthinkable at the moment. Diana sighed when their lips parted, pressing her fingers against Steve's chest to feel his heart beating.
The kiss broke and he let out a soft, shuddered sigh, his eyes remaining closed as she slid a hand down to his chest. He opened his eyes to find her looking into his own and he smiled at her, reaching up again to brush his fingers through her hair.
"Nothing," Diana assured him, closing her eyes contently. "This is perfect. She could easily sleep with their arms around each other, but she was too awake to really think of that at the moment.
Instead, she was kissing him again and pressing as close as she could.
Steve let out a sigh as Diana kissed him again, humming eagerly, his lips parting to deepen the contact again. His hand curled into her hair, dragged down her spine, and held her as close to him as he could manage.
Probably too close, considering what all the kissing and the proximity between them was doing to his body, but he just pretended nothing was happening in his trousers and hopefully she wouldn't ask either.
